Age Requirement
You must be at least 18 years old to shop for Instacart. This is a legal requirement for independent contractor work. There is no maximum age limit.
Smartphone Requirements
You need a smartphone running:
- iPhone: iOS 14 or later
- Android: Version 8.0 or later
- Reliable data plan (you'll use GPS and the app constantly)
- Camera for scanning receipts and taking photos
Vehicle Requirements (Full-Service Shoppers)
For delivery, you need:
- Reliable vehicle in good working condition
- Valid driver's license (not expired)
- Current auto insurance in your name
- Space for grocery bags (compact cars work, but larger is better)
Note: Some markets allow bikes or scooters for specific delivery types.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift 30-50 lbs (cases of water, large pet food bags)
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
- Comfortable with carrying groceries up stairs (some deliveries)
Background Check Details
What Instacart Checks
Instacart uses Checkr to conduct background checks that include:
- Criminal history (felonies and misdemeanors)
- Sex offender registry
- Motor vehicle records (driving history)
- SSN verification
What Can Disqualify You
- Felony convictions within past 7 years
- DUI/DWI convictions within past 7 years
- Violent crime convictions
- Theft, fraud, or dishonesty convictions
- Sexual offenses
- Multiple serious traffic violations
What Typically Won't Disqualify You
- Minor traffic violations (speeding tickets, parking tickets)
- Convictions older than 7 years (in most states)
- Arrests without conviction
- Expunged or sealed records
How to Apply: Step-by-Step
Download the Instacart Shopper App
Available on iOS App Store and Google Play. Make sure you download "Instacart Shopper" (not the customer app).
Create Your Account
Enter email, phone number, and create a password. Verify your phone with the code sent via SMS.
Enter Personal Information
Legal name (as on ID), address, date of birth, and Social Security Number for background check.
Upload Documents
Take a photo of your driver's license (front and back). Make sure lighting is good and all text is readable.
Consent to Background Check
Review and agree to the background check by Checkr. This is required for all shoppers.
Wait for Approval
Most approvals happen within 24-48 hours. You'll receive an email when you're approved to start.
Complete Onboarding
Watch training videos, learn the app, and you're ready to accept your first batch!
