Heat Press vs Sublimation Printer

These are not alternatives. One of them is useless without the other.

Verdict

Buy the heat press first, because sublimation cannot work without one and vinyl can. A heat press applies heat and pressure, which is what transfers both heat transfer vinyl and sublimation ink. A sublimation printer only produces the transfer sheet. Start with a press and vinyl, learn what you are doing on cotton, and add sublimation when you have a reason. Sublimation only works on polyester or specially coated blanks, which is the limitation nobody mentions before the purchase.

Choose the VEVOR 2-in-1 Heat Press 15x15 if…

You are starting. A press plus heat transfer vinyl makes shirts, bags and hats on the widest range of fabrics including cotton, which is what most customers actually want. It is also what you will use with sublimation later, so nothing is wasted. Buy a press with even heat and a reliable timer rather than the cheapest one, because uneven pressure is what causes peeling transfers.

Choose the Epson SureColor F170 Sublimation Printer if…

You want full colour photographic prints and you are working with polyester or coated blanks. Sublimation ink becomes part of the fabric, so there is no vinyl layer to crack or peel, and the results on the right substrate are excellent. On cotton it simply washes out, which is why cotton blanks are not a sublimation product.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does sublimation not work on cotton?

The ink bonds with polyester at high heat and has nothing to bond to in cotton fibres, so the colour fades or washes away. Poly-cotton blends give faded results in proportion to the cotton content, which some sellers use deliberately for a vintage look.

Can I use a household iron?

For learning, sometimes. An iron cannot hold even pressure or an accurate temperature across a whole design, which is why transfers applied with one peel after a few washes. If you are selling, use a press.

Is there a safety issue?

A press runs at temperatures that cause serious burns instantly, and sublimation and vinyl release fumes when overheated. Work in a ventilated space, use heat resistant gloves, and never leave a hot press unattended around children or pets.
